Pre-election message to the voters of Washington state:

Thank you for the trust and confidence you placed in me as your State Auditor.  The opportunity to serve comes with a great responsibility, and I take that responsibility very seriously. 

We have increased the visibility, and thus the credibility – of a somewhat overlooked office.  But the Office of State Auditor is absolutely essential to good government. The founders of Washington created it and put it in the Constitution as a very independent check and balance over state and local government operations.

The fundamental issue for State Auditor is accountability.  I define accountability as a government that is open, accessible, responsive and responsible . . . . a government that listens, and when it talks to people it tells them the truth. 

That’s why in your behalf I have submitted executive request legislation to strengthen public access laws and I have actively served on the board of the Washington Coalition for Open Government.  In all our audits, we regularly check for government compliance with open public meetings and public records laws.
We also have involved citizens throughout the state, eliciting their thoughts and ideas to help us determine where we direct audits.

I well understand who I work for – you.   I am proud to be supported by Democrats, Republicans and independents who value my approach to public service.

In the last election, Washington voters once again made me the state’s top vote-getter.  I am very proud and humbled by that show of support.  Your vote is important to me this year.  So I once again ask you to vote for Brian Sonntag as your State Auditor.
