Washington State Auditor

Long Distinguished Career in Elective Office

  • First elected to public office in 1978 – at age 26 – as Pierce County Clerk. The top administrator for the Superior Courts.  At the time, the youngest elected county official in state history.  Served two terms.
  • Elected to two terms – in 1986 and 1990 – to the office of Pierce County Auditor, an office his late father once held. 
  • Elected State Auditor in 1992 – Washington State’s eighth elected auditor.
  • Re-elected by state citizens in 1996, 2000 and 2004, all by overwhelmingly margins. 

 

Recognized for Effectiveness

  • Received the Washington Newspaper Association’s “Freedom’s Light Award” for his advocacy for strong open government laws.
  • An active board member on the Washington Coalition for Open Government.
  • Honored by the Seattle Municipal League, which honored Brian with its Warren G. Magnuson Award for his work to hold governments accountable and responsive to the public.
  • Chosen by Tacoma Community College as its Distinguished Alumni of the Year in 2007 for his public service and community involvement.

 

Proven Leadership

  • Recognized as a Certified Government Financial Manager by the national Association of Government Accountants (AGA) following a rigorous qualification process.
  • Appointed as a Trustee on the AGA’s Academy for Government Accountability.
  • Served on the National Association of State Auditor’s “Performance Audit Task Force.”

 

Committed to Public Service

  • Family history of public service.  Brian’s late father, Jack, was Pierce County Auditor for 22 years.  His brother, Jack, was a career teacher, school administrator and state champion football coach.  Another brother, Richard, was a member of the Tacoma City Council and Tacoma School Board.
  • Long-serving gubernatorial appointee to the state Productivity Board, which rewards state employees for innovative, cost-saving ideas to improve government service.
  • Co-chairs Public Service Recognition Week, an annual event showcasing the achievements of state employees.

 

Community Contributions

  • Past member of the United Way Board, Board of the Boys and Girls Club, and active in the March of Dimes.
  • YMCA volunteer and for many years a youth Baseball and Basketball Coach.
  • Member of the Tacoma Athletic Commission.

 

Strong Family Roots

  • Brian and his wife, Jann, reside in Tacoma, where he has lived all his life. Together, they have raised five sons.  They have three grandchildren.
